Neutral fibre as a platform for innovation

This study shows how the City of Stockholm, with its dark fibre utility company Stokab, has enabled the development of leading edge communication technologies as well as supporting the provision of high-tech applications in the field of audio-visual media, quantum computing and smart cities. Stockholm scores particularly high on the number of scientific publications, the number of patents and the number of SMEs introducing product innovations, innovative business processes, sales of new-to-market and new-to-firm innovations.
By establishing a neutral dark fibre network with a futureproof network design (point-to-point), and actively supporting innovation hubs and the development of smart city solutions, the City of Stockholm has provided a foundation for Stockholm to meet the EU Digital Decade targets and its position as a leading region in Europe for innovation.

A tale of five cities

Deloitte har genomfört en undersökning av kopplingen mellan en stads fiberinfrastruktur och dess innovationsförmåga inom hightech, ICT och den digitala sektorn. Infrastrukturens betydelse för en smart stad. Rapporten lyfter bland annat trender som påverkar utvecklinen av en smart stad de olika marknadsmodellerna – operatörsmodellen, specialistmodellen och samverkansmodellen - och dess olika egenskaper och vilka effekter och konsekvenser som blir för varje enskild stad. Konkurrenskraft, innovationsförmåga och tillväxt

Rapporten bygger på intervjuer med ett antal företag i olika branscher som beskriver hur tillgången på fiberbaserat bredband påverkar deras verksamhet samt effekterna på marknaden där det finns en operatörsneutral aktör, likt Stokab, som endast är verksam på grossistnivå. Studien, som är utförd av Marco Forzati och Crister Mattsson vid forsknings-institutet Acreo Swedish ICT på uppdrag av Stokab, ger bland annat fastighetsägare rekommendationer hur de konkret bör agera och vad som ska vägas in vid val av nät. Rapporten finns i svensk och engelsk version.

Development of High-speed Networks and the Role of Municipal Networks

This report gives further support for the notion that broadband speed matters and that high speed broadband networks generate positive benefits, contribute to economic growth, as well as to making firms more productive, based on an analysis of broadband, ICT and firm productivity in the United Kingdom and an econometric analysis of high speed broadband networks in Sweden.
